Between Coastlines

LIFE AFLOAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

What does it feel like to leave everything behind and make the sea your home?

In 2022, my husband Greg and I sold or gave away almost everything we owned, said goodbye to life on land, and moved onto a 10-metre sailboat with our cat, Nelly.

We eased into it, drifting south through France’s canals and rivers until we finally reached the Mediterranean. Four years later, two more cats had joined our crew, and our small boat had carried us across that sea in search of a different way to live.

Between Coastlines is my honest, unpolished story of four years afloat, and what I learned about myself once my life was stripped down to what fits on a boat.

Not perfect. Not easy. But real.

And because the first 150 people are making this possible, there are a few special things for you:

  • Your name will be mentioned in the book
  • You’ll receive a hand-signed thank you card from us

This book is more than the story of our journey. It’s also a project with a purpose. 20% of the profits from this project will be donated to River Cleanup, supporting their mission to keep rivers free from plastic pollution. A cause that feels especially meaningful to us.

The idea behind Between Coastlines

I’ve been thinking about writing this book for a long time, dreaming of the day I might publish our story and share it with others. But somehow, it never felt like the right moment. There was always another passage to plan or another anchorage to settle into. Until one day, sitting in my camping chair on the pontoon, I picked up a notebook and started writing our story.

What began as a few words on a page became a way of looking back at the life we’ve been living and everything it has been teaching me along the way. For the first time, I could pause long enough to see the journey from a different perspective.

Writing this book has become a way of holding onto moments that passed too quickly while we were living them. Of remembering the places, the challenges, all the people we met, and the happy moments that might otherwise have been forgotten. And of understanding how this journey has changed me.

I hope this story finds anyone who has ever felt drawn toward something different. Not a perfect life, and not necessarily an easy one, but a life that feels more honest. A life that feels like your own.

About the author

My name is Julie, and I have a passion for adventure with a bit of comfort mixed in. That’s probably why I live on a boat instead of backpacking around the world. I’ve always had the urge to do something a little crazy with my life, to step outside the ordinary and follow a different path. Somehow, that led me here: living on a sailboat for the past four years with my partner and three cats.

I’m a dreamer at heart. Following my dreams has never felt scary to me. I just trust my curiosity and let it guide me through life. If I’m honest, I’m quite a sensitive person. I tend to experience life deeply, which can be both a gift and a challenge, but it’s also what makes this journey so meaningful to me. And of course, I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by nature, where I find beauty in the simplest moments.
