When you think of sailing, you probably picture the excitement of the open sea, a cool breeze blowing through your sails and a sense of freedom that comes from nothing more than the sea. However, the art of making your boat feel comfortable, welcoming and like home is a more subdued and intimate aspect of boating that is sometimes overlooked. This is where the Danish idea of hygge comes in.
Coziness, comfort and simplicity are key components of hygge. It’s the feeling you get when you curl up with a hot drink, a blanket, peaceful surroundings and soft lighting. Even on the sea, you can create the same atmosphere on a sailboat, turning it into a haven where you can relax and feel completely at home. Here are some simple ideas for creating your own hygge-inspired oasis on board.
Create Warm, Soft Lighting
Lighting changes everything. The right lighting can make all the difference on a boat, where you’re sometimes working with limited space and power. Choose softer, warmer lighting alternatives rather than harsh, bright ones to create a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere throughout the room.
- LED lanterns or fairy lights are an excellent choice. They give off a soft, soothing glow and use very little energy. Fairy lights can be hung in a corner or strung around the cabin. The room immediately feels warmer.
- Battery-powered candles are another option. They have the same look as real candles but don’t pose a fire hazard, so you can enjoy the cosy vibes without worrying. To create a serene, cabin-like atmosphere, simply scatter a few around.
Your boat becomes a miniature retreat with this kind of lighting. Imagine having only the soft glow of fairy lights as you sit below deck. It’s the perfect way to relax.

Soft Blankets and Pillows
On a boat, fabrics make all the difference. Layering is essential if you want to stay comfortable, especially when the weather changes.
- Fleece, wool or flannel throws and blankets are essential. Throw a few on your sofa or bed for quick warmth. Having a spare at hand is especially handy on cold nights of stargazing.
- Any boat will feel more comfortable with a selection of cushions. Get a few in different sizes and materials to adjust for comfort. They’re also great for sitting on deck when you want to take in the view.
- Rugs or small mats make the cabin feel more cosy. Especially if you’re sailing in colder weather, even a small rug next to the berth or in the galley will make a difference.

Make Simple, Comforting Meals
Food on board doesn’t have to be boring. Meals don’t have to be complicated to enjoy; they can be hot and filling with a little preparation.
- One-pot dinners are ideal for life at sea. Look for recipes that are easy to prepare, easy to clean up and leave you feeling warm and satisfied, such as stews, soups or risottos. After a hard day on the water, a creamy risotto or vegetable stew is a satisfying choice for dinner.
- Hot drinks are essential. One of the simplest pleasures is sipping a hot drink, whether it’s coffee, tea or hot chocolate. To enjoy it wherever you are, get a nice thermos or insulated mug.
- Small pleasures go a long way. Bring a few things that feel like a bit of luxury, like your favourite biscuits, a nice cheese or some fine chocolate. These small pleasures have the power to lift a routine day.

Create Simple, Relaxing Rituals
Days and nights can blend into each other, giving the impression that life on a boat is eternal. Small rituals can make you feel more rooted and a part of your experience.
- Coffee on deck: Spend a few minutes outside in the morning with a cup of tea or coffee. It’s a simple habit, but enjoying the morning silence can set the mood for the rest of the day.
- Reflection at the end of each day: Take a small notepad with you and spend a few minutes jotting down ideas, observations or even a few sentences. This is just a means of recording brief memories and thoughts; it does not need to be a comprehensive diary.
- Wind down routine: Establish a basic bedtime ritual that includes a short meditation, a book or a blanket. Your sleep may feel more restful if you have something comforting to do at the end of the day.

Add Natural Touches
Adding some natural components to your boat can make it feel even more comfortable and connected to the environment.
- Collect small mementos from your travels. Whether it’s a smooth stone, a piece of driftwood or a shell, these little mementos can add a unique touch to your home and serve as a reminder of your travels.
- Fresh herbs: If you have space, keep a small pot of fresh herbs, such as basil or rosemary. They can be used to enhance the flavour of food and add a touch of greenery.

Make It Personal
Hygge is about creating a space that feels good, not about being perfect. So add things to your boat that make you happy.
- To make the cabin feel more like “your” place, add a handful of your favourite books, a picture or two or a small piece of artwork.
- Think about comfort and functionality. Choose items that make you feel happy and at ease rather than magazine-perfect decor.

It’s not enough to simply add blankets and dim lights to your sailboat to create a warm, hygge-inspired space. It’s about creating a space that makes you feel comfortable, content and at home. Having a hygge mindset on board only makes sailing more enjoyable, because sailing is inherently about simplicity and slowing down. You’re creating a space where you can relax, rejuvenate and enjoy all the little pleasures that come with living on the water.
So next time you’re out and about, think about lighting a few fairy lights, making a hot cup of tea and stopping to enjoy the moment. Being able to relax and feel at home while travelling can sometimes be the best part of the experience.
